Villagio at The Estate Yountville
We added Hotel Villagio to our Napa Valley shortlist for a simple reason: it treats...
Hotel Yountville started as a mid-century roadside motel before designers Lisa Holt and David Shapiro rebuilt it into something closer to a small country estate: 80 suites spread across five acres, arranged like individual villas rather than stacked hotel floors. Each suite keeps its own entrance and a private backyard, a layout that owes more to the original motel's low, spread-out footprint than to a conventional resort tower, repurposed rather than demolished to make the sustainability case, and kept at a scale that never feels like a renovated chain property.
We chose Hotel Yountville because it deliberately breaks from Napa Valley's usual European-chateau look. The modern forms Holt and Shapiro introduced, paired with reclaimed and natural materials throughout, give the property a design identity distinct from the stone-and-turret estates nearby. A full spa, an outdoor pool, and a farm-to-table restaurant on site round out a stay that doesn't require a single trip off the grounds, while the private backyards give every suite a degree of separation a standard hotel floor can't offer, even at full occupancy.
Washington Street puts the hotel inside Yountville proper, where a short walk covers several of the valley's most talked-about restaurants without needing a car between courses. The five-acre grounds themselves feel like a retreat once a guest is inside the gate, but the village's restaurant row stays close enough to reach on foot for dinner. It's a location that lets a stay feel both secluded and conveniently placed at once, which is harder to find in Napa Valley than the acreage alone would suggest.
Price: Luxe
Vibe: villa-style, modern, five-acre retreat
Chambres: 80 suites, each with a private entrance and backyard, across five acres
Best For: couples wanting privacy, travelers who prefer a villa layout to a hotel corridor
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the two-person jacuzzis built into suites finished with Napa fieldstone fireplaces and German oak floors
Dining: an on-site restaurant serving modern American farm-to-table cuisine
Amenities: full-service spa, outdoor pool, fitness center, private suite backyards, pet-friendly rooms
Attractions: Yountville's restaurant row, surrounding vineyards, village shopping streets
Each of the 80 suites opens onto its own backyard rather than a shared corridor, finished inside with Napa fieldstone fireplaces, exposed beams under vaulted ceilings, dark German oak floors, and teakwood furnishings. Two-person jacuzzis, rainfall showers, and king beds dressed in Italian linens fill out an open floor plan built for generous proportions rather than the efficient footprint of a standard hotel room. It's a suite designed to be lived in for a few days, not just slept in for one night, and the backyard alone changes how a rainy Napa morning feels.
The on-site restaurant works modern American technique around farm-to-table ingredients, giving the hotel a dinner option that doesn't require driving into Yountville's village center, while the full-service spa and outdoor pool round out a day that can run entirely inside the five-acre grounds. For a guest who has already spent the day visiting wineries by car, the appeal of staying put for the evening is its own kind of luxury, and the spa menu leans toward treatments built around the valley's own produce.
Reclaimed materials run through the property rather than sitting in a single showcase feature, a deliberate choice by Holt and Shapiro to celebrate locally sourced character instead of imitating a European estate. It's a quieter form of sustainability than a LEED plaque on the wall, expressed instead through fieldstone, reclaimed oak, and teak that would otherwise have gone unused, and it gives the hotel a material honesty that ages better than a trend-driven renovation built to photograph well for a single season.
