Villagio at The Estate Yountville
We added Hotel Villagio to our Napa Valley shortlist for a simple reason: it treats...
Bardessono opened in Yountville in 2009 as one of only two hotels in the United States to earn LEED Platinum certification at the time, a credential it backs with 190 kilowatts of rooftop solar panels and 72 geothermal wells drilled 300 feet into the ground. None of the 62 rooms rise past two stories, a deliberate choice that keeps the hills around Yountville in view rather than building over them, and the result reads as restrained rather than austere, closer to a collection of connected courtyards than a single large building.
We chose Bardessono because its sustainability credentials are matched by an unusually personal design story: the stone walls are built from the former Bardessono family wine cellar, the timber from salvaged wine barrels, and the olive trees on the grounds were transplanted at a century old rather than planted new. Two Michelin Keys arrived in 2025, recognizing the architecture and service together rather than either alone, which tells a guest the eco-credentials never came at the cost of comfort, sixteen years after the hotel first opened its doors.
Yountville itself is built at a scale rare in Napa Valley, a village of a few blocks where several of the region's most-discussed restaurants sit within walking distance of each other and of the hotel. Vineyards surround the town rather than requiring a long drive to reach, and Bardessono's low, courtyard-based layout extends that same human scale into the hotel itself. It's a location that rewards leaving the car in the lot for the whole stay, with dinner, a glass of wine, and the walk home all inside a few minutes of each other.

Ground-floor rooms open directly onto private courtyards, each fitted with an outdoor shower and a soaking tub, effectively giving a guest a second, open-air room rather than a balcony. Dual-pane glass keeps the interiors quiet and thermally stable despite all that openness, and earth-toned finishes keep the palette tied to the hills outside rather than importing a generic luxury look. Bridges crossing small, still pools link the courtyards to the rest of the property, reinforcing the sense of moving through a garden rather than a corridor.
The spa's treatment rooms lean on the same natural textures as the rest of the hotel, rammed earth and reclaimed stone chief among them, rather than a standard marble-and-chrome treatment suite. A wine cellar built into the property gives the pours on site a sense of permanence that a rotating hotel wine list usually can't match, tying the hotel's own name and history back to the valley's winemaking rather than treating it as scenery, and the pairing of spa and cellar under one roof says plainly what the stay is built around.
When Bardessono received two Michelin Keys in 2025, the recognition covered architecture, design, service, and character together, not a single standout feature. For a hotel that built its original reputation on environmental credentials rather than star chefs or celebrity design names, it's confirmation that the quieter approach has aged well, sixteen years into the building's life rather than in its opening season, and in a valley crowded with newer, louder openings.
