The Westin Verasa Napa
We chose this all-suite property for the restaurant it quietly kept: La Toque, chef Ken...
Napa River Inn is built into the Historic Napa Mill, a complex anchored by the A. Hatt Building, raised in 1882 by Captain Albert Hatt as a working grain and feed mill. A decade of restoration turned the brick warehouses and their red mill tower into a hotel without erasing what they were, and the complex now holds both local landmark status and a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The 66 rooms are spread across these converted buildings, arranged around courtyards that once moved sacks of grain rather than luggage, on a stretch of riverbank that has watched over Napa's working waterfront since the 1840s.
We chose Napa River Inn because it offers something no new build can fake: a genuine 19th-century address on the water, backed by Historic Hotels of America recognition and three independent restaurants on site rather than a single hotel dining room. The riverfront courtyards, the brick-and-awning architecture, and a spa built around Napa Valley's own wine-grape-seed oils give the property a sense of place that a standard Wine Country hotel room rarely delivers, and the National Register listing means that sense of place isn't just marketing copy.
The inn sits directly on the Napa River at the edge of downtown, on a stretch that served as a steamboat landing since the 1840s before it ever hosted a guest. First Street's tasting rooms and restaurants start within a five-minute walk, while the hotel's own riverfront patios mean an evening can begin without leaving the property at all. It's a rare Napa stay where the water, not the vineyard, sets the view, and where the walk back after dinner is measured in steps rather than a designated driver.
Price: Luxe
Vibe: historic, riverfront, brick-and-courtyard
Chambres: 66 rooms across the restored Historic Napa Mill buildings

Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the red mill tower and brick courtyards of the 1882 A. Hatt Building, still standing over the river
Dining: Angèle (French bistro, riverfront patio) and Celadon (Michelin-recommended comfort food), both on site
Amenities: on-site spa using Napa Valley wine-grape-seed products, riverfront courtyards, bike tours
Attractions: the Napa Riverfront promenade, First Street tasting rooms, downtown Napa's restaurant row
Spread through the mill's converted buildings, the 66 rooms trade the uniformity of a purpose-built hotel for the slightly varied proportions of a 19th-century structure, with some corner rooms looking out over the river rather than the street. Furnishings lean toward the understated so the architecture keeps the lead role: exposed brick, tall windows, and the kind of courtyard outlook that makes a ground-floor room as desirable as one upstairs. It's a layout that rewards a guest who reads the room list closely rather than booking the first category offered.
Few Napa hotels can send a guest to dinner without stepping off the grounds, but the Historic Napa Mill complex houses Angèle, a French bistro with a riverfront terrace, and Celadon, a Michelin-recommended kitchen built around global comfort food, alongside The Fink for cocktails and a bakery for the morning after. It turns a one-night stay into something closer to a self-contained riverfront evening, the kind where the only reservation that matters is the one for dinner, made before check-in.
The Spa at Napa River Mill works an in-house Napa Valley Organics line into its massages and facials, made with local wine-grape seeds rather than an imported product line, a detail that ties the treatment menu back to the valley just outside the door. Paired with Amelia's gift shop for local artisan goods, it rounds out a property where almost every amenity, from the bar to the bath products, points back to this specific stretch of the Napa River.
